What does this quote mean by Abraham Lincoln?

" Am I not destroying my enemies when I make friends of them?"

You know, turn your enemies into your friends.

I translate this one as being nice to everyone but never let them walk over you.

The fewer enemies you have the better, that is very true.

Agreed - by diffusing the anger in the enemy, what is left? The door is open to become a friend.

For each friend you make from among your enemies,
It makes one less enemy and one more friend.
