Please use proper grouping symbols. Without them your equation is ambiguous. But I think you mean:

\frac{1}{x+1}+\frac{2}{x+3}=5

What's the common denominator? (x+1)(x+3).

Multiply through by the common denominator, cancel, then you have an equation with no fractions. Then you'll have a quadratic to solve for x. Use the quadratic formula. It won't factor easily.
