Ijust replace the condenser fan on my rheem ac unit. The old fan had three wire brown yellow and black ,the new fan have four wire two browns yellow and black.I was told by the saleman to hook both brown to the new single capacitor and the yellow & black to the contactor. My old capacitor had a (c) (herm) (fan) hook up .There is a purple wire that run from the compressor that is not hook up where do this wire go. On the old capacitor it hookup to the (HERM).but when I now hook up the old capacitor the breaker trips

Did the salesman give you a new capacitor

If you had a duel capacitor before then you need to either replace it with a duel capacitor or leave it in place and wired up to the compressor, then add a new single capacitor, then connect the two brown wires to the new capacitor, then connect the yellow and black to the same place the old wires were connected to(old capacitor and contactor) the herm terminal wire old capacitor goes to the start winding on the compressor. Good luck ,Mike

The two browns do go to the new capacitor, yellow to the (c) on the old capacitor, black to black going to the contactor. The purple will hook back up at herm on the old capacitor.(if that was the place it was at first and it goes to the compressor). Good luck.

I am having a similar problem with replacing my fan motor on me Rheem unit. I had to replac my three wire motor with a four wire motor. The old fan had black, orange and brown wires. The new motor has black, white, brown, brown with stripe wires. The black and white wires go to the contactor and the brown wires go to a new capacitor. This new wiring set up required me to remove a 'jumper' wire from the contact to the old capacitor as well as remove the brown wire from the old motor. Now there is only one wire going to the old capacitor which is a purple wire from the compressor going to Herm. Is this correct for only one wire to go to a capacitor... it seems there is no 'continuous circuit'.
