My ex arrears is over $12,000 in child support, what can I do to collect money from him. It seems child support is not doing anything in trying to get this money from him.

Does the child support agency have all the information on him that would be necessary about him in order for them to collect support? If you live in the U.S. like his social security number, where he works and lives, etc.

Do you know where he works? They can garnish his salary. There are also support groups that you can try and contact.

Yes they do have all his information, I also call and give them the updates. He has a busniess.

My daughters father has back child support, he just has to pay a certain amount over the order child support until the arreage is caught up.

If he is paying monthly, you can request a hearing to get the amount he pays towards the arreage raised.

If his is not paying child support at all, you need to call child support... if you don't get anywhere with your case worker ask to speak to their supervisor (that always gets someone to do something). He can be held in contempt of a child support order.

Well maybe child support offices differ among states.

In Ohio, I have a specific case worker that deals with all my stuff... their name is listed on any paperwork I get from child support.

There are other things that child support can do when the father is not paying child support. (at least in Ohio). My daughters father has had his drivers license suspended multiple times for non payment... and it stays suspended until payments start coming in. Then if there is a history of non payment, child support has a litigation team that will take him to court to hold him in contempt. Once child support gets to a certain amount of arreages, the non payer can be ordered to serve jail time.

Did you talk to a supervisor when you went down or just someone at the front desk?

If it was someone other than a supervisor, they will do anything to get you to take care of it on your own. You have to be PERSISTENT and DEMANDING.

There is also an organization that will help you get your owed child support (it may be the one that was listed above). They take a percentage of the child support for their "fee", but sometimes something is better than nothing.

Are you having to file a petition because he moved from one state to another? I ask this because I know that is what my ex had to do when I moved for the child support agency to even collect child support from me. It had to be made official through the courts in some way in order for them to even collect it from me in the state where I live.

Yeah your right every state is different. They did suspend his drivers license but that's not going to make him pay anything he still drives around.

Depending on the laws and procedures for your state, they can do any of several things, including but not limited to intercepting his tax returns, increasing the amount currently withheld from his wages for child support, placing liens on his real assets, denying him a passport, suspending his driver's and/or professional licenses. There are numerous steps that can be taken to collect or at least increase the likelihood of collecting back due child support. How drastic they'll get generally depends on whether he's now making payments on a regular basis. If he is, don't expect the authorities to get too severe as they won't put him in a position that would jeopardize his ability to keep paying currently (e.g. taking his driver's or professional licenses or putting him in jail.) However, if he's not paying anything now and hasn't been for a significantly long time, then he could end up incarcerated along with all of the aforementioned sanctions.
