I had a plumber come out to my house in Fairfax, Virginia to install a new toilet in my main floor powder room in February. We never discussed the price nor did I sign any contract. Two days later, the ceiling fell in in the basement under the powder room where the toilet had obviously leaked. I called him and he came out and made the necessary repairs to install the toilet properly. I received a bill in April for over $1,000 for his services. I had to pay a drywall man $350 to repair the ceiling in the family room from the water damage. I called the plumber several times and requested an itemized statement of the work he did and he has refused to submit one to me. His bill only says for services rendered. I have not heard from him since and honestly, totally forgot about it. Today, I found a letter from him taped to my door threatening to take me small claims court if I do not pay the amount asap. He also said that the $1,000 is not negoiable. Do I have any options or do I just pay the $1,000?

Do you know exactly what he repaired or replaced?

Yes, write him back, tell him that unless you get a itemised bill, please take you to court, and in court he can provide it to the judge and explain to the judge why he would not give you one.

Next, you hired someone without asking them how much? Please learn a lesson from this.
