I am a medical student and was in my last week of school when I had to finish this project. I was suppose to see how this patient was doing. He was still a patient at the hospital but out patient, and instead of going to his house I looked up what operation he had and how his physical theropy was going on the computer. Long story short I was kicked out in the last week for laying to a teacher, falsifying documention, and violating hippa. All the info in the report was correct, so I have a case against that; but what about the hippa law since he was still a patient there? Thanks

It appears you were put out of school fro lying and saying you went to his home but instead just got the info off the computer.

It is not against HIPAA law for one medical professional to view the files of a patient. IF you had legal access to the computers, but in this case I would assume you were not allowed to use them in this manner.

I would say you violated a lot of rules, you would have violated HIPAA if you did not have permission to view those records on that specific patient.

Thanks for the reply, I meet with the college on Friday to determine if I can come back to finish the last class. If I could get some info on what I can do then that will help me in my case on why I should be reinstated.
