I ended up with a couple of Trojans I couldn't disinfect, ran my Windows XP which was great but it loaded onto my 'F' drive and everything else was on my 'C' drive.

Tried to format the 'C' drive but I got error messsage "Can't complete format"

Boot to your windows CD and go from there.
Part of the reinstall process is a format.

Hi my name is eric
What happen is that first the virus may have affected the drive c, the way you can remove it is by scan it with ant virus. You can low formatting to do it but in another another time let your Master boot record be in drive C and the rest of your file should be in back up which is D,E or F.
