My Ranch King rider has this motor on it. Last weekend I tried to start it and it smoked really bad and when it did start it ran for about 30 seconds then shut down.
I have the crankcase to be full of gas. I pulled the head thinking it was a broken ring but the cylinder wall looks great. After installing the head back on I don't think I got it back in time right but when cranking it over the exhaust valve doesn't move. Could it be a stuck lifter? The intake moves OK but the engine backfires through the exhaust.

Also when the head is removed how do you go about retiming it.

You do not re time the head, you can adjust the valves, or time the crankshaft and camshaft, and have a flywheel key on the flywheel that times it there. Sounds like you have a collapsed valve, check the valve spring.

The exhaust valve isn't moving at all and I can push it down and it comes back.

Is the push rod in place internally and at the rocker arm?

I think it is but I am not sure will have to ccheck it and see.

That can keep the valve from moving, because it will not activate the rocker arm.

I just want to let you know that the problem was the exhaust push rod wasn't on the lifter. Then we broke a rocker arm nut. Thank you it appears once we get the rocker arm nut back on it will take care of problem. By the way I am an upholsterer so if anyone needs help in that area I am here.
