View Full Version : Stink from shower drain

I have an intermittent bad eggy smell from my shower drain. This is particularly noticeable in the mornings but can be throughout the day. It seems more noticeable when the weather has been dry for a while and the shower has not been used for a while. It is often worse when something else is draining, e.g. sink or bath. The smell improves if the shower is used.

All the bathroom appliances drain through an internal wall into a soil pipe which then passes under the floor of one of the bedrooms before going through an external wall and dropping vertically.

Also (may or may not be related) - use/draining of the sink or bath often results in "popping" or gurgling noises from the sink which can last for some time after use.

Would appreciate any advice on possible causes and any suggestions on solving.

Thanks in advance.

Most bad shower and lavatory smells are caused by rotting hair matted with grease from the soap. Try this. Tonight before you go to bed pour 1/2" gallon of bleach down the drain. Next morning flush the bleach out with, (and this is important) two large pans of boiling water. The bleach will start to dissolve the hair and the boiling water will melt the grease and flush the mess out.

This tells me that the vent's blocked and you're venting through the lavatory trap. The solution would be tp snake the lavatory roof vent. Put out enough cable to reach the base and 15 feet more. Good luck, Tom
