I lost my mother in February and have since moved in to care for my 85 year old dad. While waiting for the insurance to pay for her life insurance, I totally depleted my checking and savings account.
My dads income has now dwindled, due to the lack of my mom's Social Security.
We are in need of some help and I honestly don't know where to turn.
My dad has secondary pulmonary hypertension very badly.
He is on oxygen 24/7 - he can't even walk from his chair to the rest room without getting dizzy losing his breath and losing what oxygen he had before he got up.
Please, please tell me where to go or who to contact for compensation. Are there no community or government entities who help with problems like this? :confused:

If you dad is on oxygen 24/7 then the unit that is pumping oxygen into the tube that he is wearing around his nose is supposed to be travelling with him from room to room. These tanks and ogygenators are really expensive and use a lot of electricity. Who is paying for the use of the oxygen unit and hydro while he is on it. Do you mean he has COPD, chronic obstrucive polminary disease?

You will have to go to your government, state websites to find out what is provided for compensation .

Hi. I work with Social Security Disability claimants. Unfortunately, It sounds like you may not have any options with other sources of income. However, you can try to contact the American Lung Association for possible help with the cost of the equipment needed.

If your father owns his home, you can also look into a reverse mortgage (provided it's paid off) for additional income. The AARP has a private insurance plan that he also may be eligible for.

Secondary pulmonary hypertension is a tough diagnosis to have. I wish your father well.

And I am a provider of medical equpment including O2, medicare pays for 80 percent of the cost of the oxygen and equpment. If your dad is on limited income, there are many providers that will write off the balance as a hardship after applying for it.

Also there are now approved managed care plans that can be done under medicare that provides more coverage than standard medicare though a program supplied by a private carrier.

Next if you are the caregiver, you can not be paid for caring for your dad. If you need a caregiver to come in and watch your dad while you work, or to help with baths or feeding, the state can help provide that often.

But waiting on the life insurance, that is normally 4 weeks top after you supply a copy of the death certificate. I got my dads in about 2 weeks.
So if you arer "waiting" there is a issue you need to follow up with.
