The argument against raising the minimum wage is that employers will try to get by with fewer workers. Or they will outsource to less expensive workers.

As far as employees are concerned it will effect mostly low end retail and first time job workers, usually teens in fast food establishments, unless hired by McDonald's where they are often hired-in past retirement age. A few companies will not be able to afford to pay the overhead and employees therefore resulting in eventual failed businesses. Usually these are already very poorly managed businesses in the first place. Anyway most people that are working underpaid would do better to get better paying jobs, especially larger families with one parent incomes. So in that respect it's motivation to start looking, if a persons unsure of the consequence. The only excuse I find for running a sweat shop is that if you are the business owner, self-employed, and with no staff except yourself. In other words, by far the majority of Americans wages should increase as the cost of living escalates. If I recall the stats correctly over the past nine years, twenty-one States raised the minimum wage in their respected States, instead of waiting on the Federal level to do something.

NSG,
There are two possibilities.
1) If the raise is small, chances are nothing will happen. There will be no significant benefit to low-wage workers, who STILL won't be able to afford the basics, and it won't affect those with higher wages at all.
2) If the raise is significant, it will result in employers hiring fewer employees and trying to get by on fewer workers. Or else, they will fire their legal employees and replace them with illegal, lower-wage workers. The result will be an increase in unemployment, a decrease in retail sales, a decrease in manufacture and wholesale trade, layoffs of more employees, a general recession, increased poverty, and lower average incomes overall.
Simply put, unless wages are driven by market forces, an increase in wages through artificial means always causes economic problems. And in a time when low-inome, sub-prime borrowers are having trouble making their house payments, the last thing we need is to compund the problem by causing those same low-income people to lose their jobs because employers can't afford to pay their salaries.

Hi NSG-
Last stats I read was from the mid-nineties to late nineties where the avg Jewish family (U.S.) was in the lower to mid 5 figure range. Maybe Elliot can find something more updated. I'll warn you to be cautious with any Jewish stats. We have a rather large Jewish community of holocaust survivors living in the Los Angeles area, about 10,000 people, many hovering around the poverty standard. The number average goes up significantly only because of the top end wealthier within the minority.

I don't think this site has any information about the salaries of American Jews in particular, but it does have a lot of good information about salary by industry, occupation, and location, if you're interested in any of that. It's not directly related to the question, but it might help :)

That data is not available. First of all, census questionnaires do not list "Jewish" as an ethnic group, and therefore the census data does not correlate "Jewish incomes" as compared to other ethnic groups. And I have not seen an income breakdown by religious group in the census data I have viewed. I have certainly never seen a breakdown of "jewish incomes".
And I am not so sure that Jews have the highest incomes of non-hispanic whites either. I think that's a misconception without basis in the facts. It may be true, but there is currently no data to back it up, and I'm not really sure that it is true at all.
The best place for raw data on income levels, broken down by race, ethnicity, job title, state, etc. is fom the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That's the source for most of my raw data on income, total compensation, poverty and employment levels.

Nothing will happen. Most people, even those who work at McDonalds, get paid more than minimum wage. I'll probably make the Democrats feel good, though, but not much else.

I agree with excon
When the economy is good market forces dictate that the worker get better pay. Unemployment is close to historic lows so the workers can shop their services to the employer willing to give them the best deal. The minimum wage at the national level as a standard has always lagged behind reality .

White Americans have the second highest median household income and personal income levels in the nation. The median income per household member was also the highest, since white Americans had the smallest households of any racial demographic in the nation. In 2006, the median individual income of a white American age 25 or older was $33,030, with those who were full-time employed between ages 25 and 64 earning $34,432. Since 42% of all households had two income earners, the median household income was considerably higher than the median personal income, which was $48,554 in 2005. Among whites, Jewish Americans rank first in household income, personal income and educational attainment among white Americans. In 2005, non-Hispanic white households had a median household income of $48,977, 10.3% above the national median of $44,389. American-born Cuban Americans (half of the Cuban American populace) almost all classify as white, and have a higher median income and educational attainment level than non-Hispanic whites.[25]

Wow girl, in one post you managed to offend black people, Jews, Democrats and pilots. Hmmmm.
I'd say that 85% of the Jews in this country are Democrats. Jews are white. Jews aren't cheap. Some black people are Republicans (well not many), and I don't know what you have against pilots.

Sorry, I don't mean to offend anyone. I am confused tomder said him,Bobby and you are both Jewish? I guess Tomder is, since he is tanned, he must travel a lot. Rich people get good tanned because they have money to go to nice beaches. I have nothing against pilots, they are hot.;) I guess he is a Jewish.
Bobby... Hm... not sure, I know he has married an asian lady then he MUST BE smart.:) So... yea... he could be Jewish.

I for one cannot stand hanging out at beaches . Oh I go ;but mostly to fish.
I said I was an honorary Jew . My religion is Roman Catholic.
Rich is a relative term. Describe rich and I'll tell you if I am.
This year I have travelled more than recently . I went to Alaska last month and earlier to Florida for family matters (wild horses couldn't get me there otherwise ) . When I was younger I had opportunities to do much more travel . I lived in Iran for a while when I was not in college. That gave me the opportunity to visit some European cities in transit and other brief stopovers in places like Beirut. My biggest regret from that time is in not making Israel one of my destinations . One of these days...
Oh and my tan?? I get tan on cloudy days . Lol . I do a lot of hiking and gardening so I spend a lot of time outdoors .

Let me put this in the proper context, what is being discussed here is income inequality- distribution of income. What will happen is a wage increase will redistribute some of the income so that the poor aren't as poor and the rich aren't as rich.

Since we are getting at each others race or religion I may as well give mine. I am a White Atheist whose fundamental philosophy is the same as Trotsky i.e. we're for the “forces that promote the genus and generosity of the human spirit,” we're against right-wing nationalism, anti-Semitism and those who would obstruct democracy. In short we're for freedom and liberty for all.

First, I don't run a bank. I work for one. HUGE difference.
Second, I am anything but rich. I'm, at best, middle class. "Barely getting by" is closer to my usual state of being.
Third, the majority of Jews are Dems. I have no idea why. Given our history and our general relationship with liberalism and socialism throughout history, it simply doesn't make any sense to me that so many Jews would choose to be Dems.

Maybe Jewish Americans are democratic because they have been through more racism in the past couple thousand years than anybody. I think it's more about equality than business. I think that's why most African Americans are democratic too. Maybe I'm wrong.

Well that is certainly the perception... that the Dems are better on race issues than the Republicans. However, is it the reality? I certainly don't think so. If I remember correctly, it was Southern DEMOCRATS that maintained segregation all the way into the 1960s, after a Republican named Lincoln ended slavery. I'm not saying that there weren't racist Republicans, because there were. But I'm saying that the Dems do not have a significantly better record on race issues than Reps.
And since the values of Judaism fit better with Rebublican Judeo-Christian "family values" (note the "Judeo" part of that phrase) than with Democratic liberalism, I can't understand why, when taken as a whole, more Jews aren't Republicans.

Gallivant_Fellow,
I agree with ETW. If we look at political history on a whole, it's the conservative nature of the Republican party that has an ideology that comes closer to traditional Jewish thought. It was, perhaps, the recent 35 or so years that brought the Democratic party to join the forefront on equality issues. Some would say an over adjustment. As for why Jews in the past are more likely to have voted Democratic I think it is the appearance of a more economically viable representation to include all people. Personally, over the past two decades or so I've found it more challenging to support Democratic candidates, at least in the national elections, because many continue to overlook welfare abuse and have an openness towards permitting abortion in general. I'm Jewish, registered Democrat, but I do not vote according to party. In fact depending on the issues, I'll support a Democrat, Republican, or an Independent.

ET: Yeah I know Democrats weren't always about equality, Republicans did most of the work. It seems weird to me the Dems. Weren't at it from the beginning. I guess it depends on the person though, not their party.
Babram: That's good. It's nice to be able to support a Democrat, Republican, or Independent depending on the issues. Anyone who makes up their mind about something before they even hear the issue sounds pretty dumb to me. I'd support a Dem. Or a Rep. too if they suited me.

Most people support the rich people because they are the only ones advertising and yeah I love it how people say they are a democrat, republican, etc... Basically if you are saying that you are a democrat or w/e you support every dem or w/e. Why can't we all just be americans and then say I'm a "Guiliani supporter" or w/e
