If you signed your rights away from your child do you still have to pay child support? Do you still have visitation rights?

I know a friend that signed his rights away and has nothing at all to do with his son now. He doesn't pay anything or see him at all.

I'm not sure if that's legally correct or just his personal situation though. Before doing something that drastic, schedule a consultation with a lawyer.

When you relinquish your parental rights, you no longer have visitation, you no longer have a say in how the child is raised, you no longer can contact the child. Basically you have nothing more to do with the child.

However, relinquishing parental rights does not, necessarily, relinquish parental responsibility. In most jurisdictions, you could still be held responsible for child support.

Terminating parental rights, either voluntarily or involuntarily is not an easy process. Most jurisdictions allow it only to clear the way for an adoption or where the parent presents a danger to the child.
