I have an Amana Temp-Assure II Heat Pump (2years old). Earlier this summer the outdoor unit quit running and a HVAC contractor came to look at it, reset the high pressure switch that tripped and said it was okay. 3-4 months later now, the same thing happened. I reset the high pressure switch myself this time and I heard the contactor pull in that sends power to the compressor and fan. I'm not sure the compressor came on or not, but the fan would not. I gave the blades a nudge with a stick and the fan started to run, but at a slower than normal speed. Does this sound like the capacitor has gone bad that serves both the fan and compressor? Should I just give up and call the service man again?

You can try a capacitor. Just make sure it is the correct value

If you have an ohmmeter, you can do a rough check of a capacitor. Short it, and remove one lead. If the capacitor is healthy, as soon as you connect the ohmmeter, it should go to a high value, and then climb off scale. If it is a 2 section capacitor, check both sections.

It you purchase a like for like capacitor you can't go wrong, this is the easiest way to go. Mike
