Hello,

I have a problem with my 1992 honda accord lx. I was very low on gas and heading to the gas station. 2 blocks away from the station I ran out of gas. After adding a few gallons of gas to my Honda I'm unable to get it started. The car appears to be turning over fine. I can hear the fuel pump engage. I can even smell the gas when I get impatient in trying to get it started. I had a issue with the main relay. That has been fixed in the parking lot where its currently sitting. Can anyone give me any advice on what I should check on next?

You might replace the fuel filter. It could now be clogged from crud in the bottom of the fuel tank. Here's how to do it:

Make sure the Check Engine Light comes on for 2 seconds and then goes out.

I tired this repair today without any luck. I removed the black box that's left of the filter to provide more room. The problem I'm having is there is not enough room to really turn the wrench. I'm using a 17mm wrench on the bold that faces up and there is not enough room to turn the wrench. On the fuel intake I cannot use a flare wrench because it's next to impossible to get it around the bolt and the filter. I don't believe I'm missing anything accept lack of working space to move the wrench.

Any suggestions?

If not the filter, try to push the car with your hand get the new gas to slosh back and forth
You may have crud in fuel line or in the butterfly valve of the carburator ,do you smell gas
In the engine compartment?

Fill the tank half way slosh it wait 30 minutes try again

Try turning the ignition key to Position II, in order to pressurize the fuel rail. Repeat turning the key from Off to Position II a number of times.

I have tried going from position I to position II a few times without luck. I'm going to try and get a 17mm socket on that top bolt tonight. Is there any additive I can add to the gasoline like seafoam or something? I do smell has so I know its making it up from the fuel pump.

I replaced the fuel filter today. I'm still having the same issue with the car not starting. When I pump the pedal I do smell gas. Anything else you can think of??

What were the results of running through the tests outlined in sections A and B of the Sticky? I think you have an electrical problem. More than 90% of "crank but won't start situations" are electrical-related, not fuel. The smell of gas is because you are not getting spark. The problem just coincided with the car being low on gas and refilling it at the gas station.

I'm starting to feel like this issue is electrical. Tonight I pulled out one of the plug wires and put a spark plug into it and held it on the head case. There was no spark while my girlfriend was turning the car over. I'm starting to believe this could be the ignition coil or ignitor.

Do happen to know if a plug gap for the 1992 accord being .044 is that inches or milimeters?

Could be a defective ignitor/ignition module or coil that just happened to go out at the same time. Check to see if you're getting power at the coil. If there is power going to the coil, check for spark. If no spark your coil is bad. If there's no power at all it's probably the ignition or a fuse.
