My ex husband left a $71 late charge fee at a Video Store in High Springs, Florida. The account was in both of our names. The owner hired my 18 year old son 2 weeks ago. Today was his first payday and the owner took half the money out of his paycheck and Told him to collect it from his father.

I do not believe this is Legal! My son is very upset and is taking it out on me because he thinks I should have told him before he took the job. I did not know! I NEVER received ANY phone calls for collection of this debt and NEVER received ANY mail about unpaid late fees.

The owner plans to take the other half out of his next check. My son is very upset that he has to pay for his father's debt and believes the only reason the owner hired him was so he can make him pay his father's debt!

I gave my son the money but it is not the point. How can he make my son pay for something that is not his responsibility? Can I sue the owner? Who do I call?

No that would be very much illegal as he can not be held accountable for a debit that he himself did not incur. I would call the video store and demand the repayment of his pay and/or contact the department of labor for your state and file a formal complaint.
