I have been living at my apartment for 3 years and from the day I moved in I had a roach problem. He is trying to blame me for a whole building infestation which is not true at all. What can I do about it legally? Do I continue to pay rent for his roaches too? I contacted the Illinois Attorney General about the problem. They said that they called the State Health Department and I also contacted the county and they came and took pictures and told me it was the worst that they have ever seen.

What can a slumlord do against you?

So what did the Health Dept do? Did they issue summonses? Did you follow up with them?


Is this a multi-family dwelling? If so, I would get all the tenants together and pool your rent to hire an exterminator. Inform the landlord that since he hasn't done anything, you are taking this step. If it's a single unit, then do that yourself.
