View Full Version : Installing a french door in concrete block

I’m thinking about installing a new French door in by basement. My question is what is the best way to attaché to the door to the concrete block? Should I cut the opening to the required rough opening size and attach the door directly to the block. Or should I make the opening larger, and frame the opening with pressure treated wood first and attach the door to the wood?

Thanks

I think the latter would go easier being able to use finishing nails to hold the frame to the 2 x 4's. However, you might need very wide trim to run from the door frame to the block over the 2 x 4's. If the wall is finished, perhaps you could add drywall to cover the gap. Maybe use two 2 x 4's to give support on both sides.

I agree with labman. No matter what type of material opening you have, I would always frame in with wood (and in this case PT-wood). This allows for much easier transitions down the road. Also, later on- if the door ever gets changed out, all of the wear and tear on the block could lead to structural compromises. Framing it in acts as a 'sacrificial edge'. As for the block width, of course you put the door even with the outside edge of the basement wall. Then I would just install extension jambs ripped to the correct width, if needed. That might cut down on those nasty and hard to do drywall corners. Especially right beside a doorway, which might get bumped often.

Just my two cents...

Good luck,

It fit in with my ideas, and will help me with question I posted.
