My inlaws need to move in to my house and they think that they can use their attorney to draw up a form of a lease of their own rules. What they are thinking, I really done know. Who does this and is it legal for I am the homeowner.

Hello shannon:
It's legal if you sign it and it doesn't conflict your state landlord tenant laws. However, I wouldn't let them write the lease. You can pick up a boiler plate version that complies with your state law at most office supply stores. It's not as good as it would be if you hired a lawyer yourself, but it's only a couple a bucks. It's certainly better than one drawn up by your tenants.

There is nothing wrong in their drawing up a lease for you to sign. But you do not have to agree to it if you don't think the terms treat you fairly. You have the right to draw up your own lease or to make modifications to the way they draw, until you both have a document you each can live with.

I wouldn't recommend signing it as it will probably be unnecessarily long and wordy and be filled with loopholes giving them multiple reasons they can break the lease with little notice or withhold payment for minor problems.
