It has been my experience that you will need the vehicle title transferred, if the vehicle has been issued one by the state you're in, and perhaps a signed, witnessed bill of sale with all the pertinent data on it. Some places may request the current odomeeter reading.

1. Go to Clerk of Courts with the owner, In some States it is the Burea of Motor Vehicles, You will need to call and find out which you use in your area. Where I live it is Clerk of Courts.
2. The title must be signed by seller and buyer and notarized. They have a notary at location.
3. Pay sales Taxes
4. Buy tags, either 30 day tags, have them transferred from old car, or buy the plates you will be using for the rest of the year.
5. Make sure you take your ID with you. I would take at least 2 forms. Drivers license and social security or birth certificate. May not need 2 types but why take a chance.

Before you buy, have the car checked over by a mechanic. Generally private sales are considered as is, so if anything shows up wrong, you are stuck.

Hello Ford:
Let me reiterate what ScottGem said. Have your own mechanic check it out. The second you drive the car away, you own it lock stock and barrel with NO warrantee. I don't care if he said that he just replaced lots of things. If he didn't write down that he guarantees those things on the bill of sale, then you have NO guarantee, and it doesn't matter what was said.
