1. Distribute the 2.
2. Subtract the same number from each side until one side has only variables and their coefficients and exponents, and the other side has no variables.
3. Divide by coefficient if necessary.
4. Find roots if necessary.

Actually I believe the 2 to be an exponent. If so, then the distributive property does not apply. Rather, take square roots of both sides. Note that he right side of the equation is a -8 and you know what happens when you try to take a square root of a negative number, right?
