Hi,
I just got a 1978 mustang and it makes a grinding noise when I turn what could this be?? And what's it going to cost me to fix it if you know in CND$$:eek:

It is difficult to tell without being able to hear the noise. Can you tell what part of the car it is coming from. Does the car have power stearing. If so it could be low on fluid. It could be a tire rubbing the inner finder, the radiator fan rubbing on the shrould (this sometimes happens).

I am not a car person but it sounds like my tires... My car does have power steering... I'll try more fluid... Thanks

Various suspension components may need lubricated.

This car has many lube points and they should all have be lubed every time you've gotten your oil changed.

Does the noise occure as you move the steering wheel? Or once you've taken the lash out of the steering system and actually move the suspension and tires? IE: sitting still?

Sounds more like a wheel bearing than anything else. Listen to hear which corner it seems to be coming from - note that it may not seem like its coming from a corner. Other things that may cause a moanin' problem on cornering are engine/transmissions mounts but that is such a rare thing...
I kind doubt it's the tires.
Based on the car's age, I'd bet on the wheel bearings or suspension bushings. Could be a wishbone going south but best to have front end looked at. My Uncle used to say that brakes and tires are your life but the steering is kind of critical as well.

Well the sound is made when I am moving... I don't notice it when I'm sitting still... I had a gentalman who was at my garage sale take a peak and his guess was the it was... umm... the Something something Joint... JVC? I don't know but I think I'm just going to end up taking it in cause I don't think its safe to drive my clients around in wich is part of my Job

Possibly the universal joint?
The U-joints connects the transmission to the rear axle.

It will make a rotating squack noise when power is applied while driving, and the noise or pitch changes with speed. While the car is sitting still try moving the shifter slowly from Drive to Reverse, and then from Reverse to Drive, all whithout letting the car move. Listen for a significant clunk.

That's not a major repair. I'd guess under $200.00 for both joints on the driveshaft.

Well, I'm kind of thinking that a 78 Mustang is a front-wheel drive car so U-joints would out of the question but CV joints would be the major suspect.
If it's rear wheel drive then forget the CV joints (Constant Velocity Joints) and yah, the U-joints would join the list of the usual suspects.

I don't think anyone has ever heard of a production 1978 Ford Mustang that was equipped with front-wheel drive.
I could be wrong, but I doubt that.

The Ford Mustang, from the day it was born in the stable, always has and always will be a rear wheel drive car!

A 78 Mustang IS NOT a front wheel drive... There has never been a front drive Mustang. If I had to throw out a guess to this noise, I'd say its most likely an Inner Ball Socket on the Rack and Pinion steering. I had a 76 Cobra II and a 78 Cobra II (same basic car) and those were common ailments on the front ends... Have a great day... Chris
