View Full Version : Why this name?

firmbeliever
Aug 27, 2007, 04:47 AM
Whenever I read someone's post, I always wonder what the nick means and what it stands for and what it signifies for this person.

As almost everyone knows I chose my nickname as I am a firmbeliever in my religion..

I have seen very unusual names and most I have never heard before..
Why did you choose yours and what does it mean?

Thanks all

Synnen
Aug 27, 2007, 05:13 AM
Mine is a long story... essentially, it's the name I took for my character in an online game.

My husband always plays using the name Roland. Well, Roland was already taken, so he took Rolynd. His brother got that song "Rollin' with da homies" stuck in his head, and rolled the character Kykyn. Pretty soon half the guild had names that could be used with the last name "Widahomeas" (with da homies). So I took Synnen (Sinnin').

I'm really into the 1940's and the 1950's and love those type of pinup pictures. I think they look so pretty and you never see pics like that anymore.

I'm named after a favourite cocktail bar. 2 cocktails for £5 all week. 100s to choose from, best margatita in town (better even than the mexican restaurant.) The only tequila, absinthe and gin cocktail I've ever had.

I thought of the name when I was looking at my bedroom wall which is covered in posters, postcards, gig tickets and random leaflets street preachers give me. It was one of the postcards with writing on it, liked the name so took it.

My avatar is a drawing I did from an article in a fashion magazine.

Mine is a name I have used on forums and what not for years. It came from the name I was given in high school by someone who told me I had the ability to help dissolve conflict among our friends, and look from both sides past the negative things.. She had said that It was like I was Alkaline - neuterlizing the acid. The angel part just was stuck on afterwards... most of the people I have know throughout my life, would know me by this name... so its stuck now... really it doesn't make all that much sense to me anymore, but its habit to use it as a screen name.

Hello Firmbeliever,

I guess you know why I chose my name, I have been on different question answer sites for over ten years now and I have always used the same username. I would like to think that every one of us are here to help others, guide others and Jesus has done that with his teachings. Jesus is a great example of what and how we should all be and how to treat each other.

Excon's not a rabbi??

But you will not believe the image that came to my mind when I first saw your name.

Mine is a factious volleyball player that me and a team mate came up with. We made up a short story about this old man named Wang Doodle that taught us how to play. We actually got the name from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. So when we put a team together, that's the name we used. So, when I joined this site, that's the name I logged in as.

Well I love the book. In the book the yellow brick road leads to every place in the entire land of Oz. So I have to believe that it will lead you wherever it is that you need to go in life. Sometimes we set out for an adventure we were in no way prepared for and during that journey we learn about ourselves and see our real strength and courage.

My name is kind of like my signature mark. If you look on old antique maps you will more than likely see a nautical star somewhere. It's the star that looks 3-D. Nautical stars are my favorite shape/symbol, I even have them tattooed on me :p

I have used this username since I was a teenager, its about 10 years old, so you know where the 420 part came from. I've never actually done anything that involves the number 420, but it was a cool number when I was a teen. :p

Well, my real name is Jason. My friends always joked about my obvious genius (seriously... stop laughing lol) and started calling me Docta or the Doctor... then later DrJ... which later translated to DrJizzle... fo' shizzle... really, Im nothing close to someone you would think would "seriously" use the ending "izzle" on ANYTHING.. but that's just the irony of it all ;)

I would just like to say that I am firmbeliever only at AMHD and no other forums.

esquire1
Aug 31, 2007, 06:09 AM
"Esquire1" Here's my story. Growing up as a young lad in the 50's we lived not far from a railroad track. One evening playing outdoors a "rough looking" old man approached me and ask me to go inside and sneak him out something to eat. Well, I new I didn't have to sneak as I told my mother what I wanted. We had just finished eating dinner and I told mom about this old man. She fixed a plate of food (still warm) and I rushed it out to this man feeling like a hero. He ate it quickly and mumbled something and went on his way. Each day at the same time I would be outdoors waiting to see if he would return. From time to time he did show up wanting food. After time he started telling me stories of how he traveled all 48 states by riding box cars on trains. To me he seemed quite intellegent. As I grew up I wanted to be like him. As a teen, I started juming in boxcars and traveling too. Wound up in Virginia Beach and was homeless there for a while, Found a little work to earn money to return home, by bus this time with a purchased ticket. Well since then many years later I've wound up in Tennesse doing well for myself. I often think of this "Hobo" and how he impacted my life. When I needed a name for this site, I had been thinking of him. He went by Esquire. So I took his name. I'm sure after all these many years Esquire is in Hobo Heaven but his name goes on. This is my story and I'm sticking to it.

As we are talking about "whats in a name"?
I keep wondering what each ones avatar represents, some have seals, dogs and cats, bunny etc.

Mine is normally something to do with nature, currently mine is the Solar system.
I had one of Kaaba/Mecca before, but I was thinking maybe it might scare off some people as it is such an outwards show of my firmbelief.
I also try not to put something girly in my avatar pic as it is more fun when members mistake me for a guy.

I don't have an avi at the moment.. guess I'll get round to it one of these days.

Your avi did fool me because for some reason at first I did think you were a guy! Don't know why because women can have firm beliefs too!

Also I don't think it would matter to have a pic of mecca or what ever. People are entitled to have their own beliefs and express them openly I feel. Other's shouldn't feel threatened by that, as long as they don't try to force their beliefs on others. Its what makes the world more interesting!

I'm discovering that myself too.
Especially with the names.

When I first read yours, I was thinking temple lane... like a path leading to a place of worship... Who would have know it's the best bar in town LOL.

Firm, this is fun!

Ok so after reading all these, I have decided that chosing my name because of my dog is a bit boring. But what else could I be called...maybe by the name the students have given ...crazyteacherwithbigmouth

Don't worry,
I thought Tuscany was an exotic place! ;)

Tuscany the dog is named after Tuscany Italy. My husband and I went to Italy for a month 2 summers ago for our honeymoon and Tuscany was our favorite place. It was there that we decided to get a dog. So, you guys were right about the place too.

I would love to go to Italy.
Did you specifically choose Italy, or Tuscany for that matter, or did you visit other parts of Europe as well..

My mom and sister had been to Italy, and my husband is Italian so we decided to go there. My mom and sister helped us make up our tour (we did it on our own, not with an organization). We spent 3 days in Rome, a week in Positano (we had our own private villa), 4 days in Capri, a week in Tuscany (San Gimignano as our main starting place) and 5 days in Florence.

So we chose Italy, but toured the country. I want to go back there and live. The people, the culture, the atmosphere are all just amazing. It has changed how we look at retirement. I have not been anywhere else in Europe, however my mom, sister and I are planning a trip to Ireland next summer (if I am not pregnant).

Mine come from the lyrics of a song from one of my favourite bands, the Arctic Monkeys (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arctic_monkeys).

In there song "Fake Tales of San Francisco" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fake_Tales_of_San_Francisco) they sing "He talks of San Francisco, he's from Hunter's Bar ..."

Well, I live right next to Hunter's Bar (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hunter%27s_Bar)!

So, iAMfromHuntersBar! Lol!

My avatar is from Cyanide and Happiness (http://www.explosm.net/comics/1031/) which I love muchly!

Oh, and I know Moomin in real life... and love her muchly too!

Great thread by the way!

When iAMfromHuntersBar and I dated when we were at school he would squish my cheeks together and say I looked like a Moomin!
It became a pet name for me really, I like it it makes me smile!

So if you wonder what I look like my avatar is a good guide if you squish my cheeks together! HA!

Great post, could go on reading this all day!

My name is star because I have always been into astronomy from the time I was little. Stars have so much mystery to them. They are so beautiful and can guide people that are lost. The 3114 is part of the address from my first house that I lived in many moons ago. It was a place of new experiences and a great deal of wisdom was gained there. Sometimes I miss that place. Things were so simple there.

I'm really into the 1940's and the 1950's and love those type of pinup pictures. I think they look so pretty and you never see pics like that anymore.

I agree Glinda, things seemed a lot simpler then; 50'- 60's. The pictures and artwork from the 50's put me into a nostalgic great mood..

The 22 is my husbands lucky number and it is weird that I use it, now that i think about it. One time I almost signed startover22 on my check. So stupid! Anyway it was really cool to see how you guys came up with your names! Once again an excellent thread by my friend firmbeliever!

Start, the number 22 is special to me also. My sons' number on his football jersey from midget, junior high, high school and college. My daughter-in-law uses the number every time she gets the chance.

Why did you choose yours and what does it mean?

Thanks all
Not long ago my Dear Mum and my younger brother died suddenly, my Dad had died several years ago which still seems like yesterday, they were pure gold, anyway when Mum went (bless her) I then became an orphan which was exactly how I felt, very alone.

So that was the only thing in my head when I registered.

On a brighter note I hope you all had a lovely Easter time and ate lots of chocolate eggs
I held out until my footy team got slaughtered and then sat and ate 3 all in one go ,I felt real sick afterwards which yes was my own fault but it was comfort food... that's my story anyway.

Bless you all

Cerisa? It is a little fun I am having with words. Ceresa is spanish for cherry. Lisa is my given name. Risa is spanish for laughter. I know, long time since I was... anyway, My husband and drove through Colorado as kids. Stopping at cherry stands, we ate cherries and spit out the seeds all the way across the state. We kid each other about it now.
We have had a lot of long nights because of his illness. Reminiscing about fun times helps.

My first email name was kelleigh11, I had to put 11 cause it wouldn't let me just use the name. It's a combo of kelly leigh, my name and what I would have named my daughter if I hadn't miscarried.

When I came to realize my need for Jesus, I was saved. I grew up knowing the Bible said you can't get to heaven without Jesus, but as an adult realized that I am a sinner, and my attempts at righteousness are very dirty compared to God's holiness. So I finally realized that I am a sinner. Got a new email. Again, they wouldn't let me just use the name, had to have a number, so 7. It's the day of my birthday and a favorite to pick for "guess between 1 and whatever"

For anyone who knows King Arthur, I should be obvious. And for anyone who doesn't know King Arthur, you probably don't care.

Nearly all the names I use are fantasy related in some way. Even though King Arthur may have existed, I'm sure his sorceress half-sister did not. :-) Synnen should appreciate that I use names from games a lot. (I almost named my new cat after a game character.) Whoever posted in the other thread that one of their favorite books is Mists of Avalon should appreciate me too. :-) (I pulled the spelling off the movie.)

Hello:

Me?? I've chosen a derivative of the name Exconious. For those of you who don't know, Exconious is the Greek who taught Achillies how to fight. He held off 300 Spartans while making love to the beautiful and powerful, Arcmenedies, the female ruler of East Berlin...
