View Full Version : I love punk music, but I don't live the "punk" lifestyle. Is that weird?

I listen to punk music. I like to think I know a lot about it (primarily 1970s punk/protopunk).
The things is, I wear a lot of band t-shirts, but I feel weird wearing punk t-shirts. I just feel like everyone would look at me like I was trying to be cool/trying to be something that I'm not. I'm not the kind of person that goes to shows every night, I'm not hardcore, I don't live the "punk" life, etc.
So my question is: is there anything wrong with me wearing punk shirts/listening to punk music even though I'm not that kind of person? (Do you get what I'm trying to say?)

Nope not at all. If I had to live a "lifestyle" for every music I'd listen to I'd be in big trouble! I'm not a teenager but from what I remember everyone thought you were a poser (do you guys still use that word, by the way?) if you didn't dress like the music you listened to or whatever else the "requirements" were.
My advice to you is listen to what you like and if someone thinks you can't be a big fun because you are full of piercings, with crazy hair tell them that they don't check our clothes before you buy music. I'm 28 now and I listen to everything and I dress however I want and however makes me happy Do whatever you want! Don't worry about what anyone thinks (hey I think that's a punk way of thinking!)

Thanks for the advice! I still kind of care too much about what other people think of me, and I need to work on that. And yeah, we still call each other poseurs or posers, however you spell it. I just want to express myself without coming off too pretentious, too "I'm-trying-too-hard-to-be-cool".
