My friend is married and is waiting for her permanent resident card. If she divorces and marries someone else, does she have to start over with her process? Should she wait to get divorced until after she obtains her perm residency card? How does her divorce affect her status?

In either case, if she divorces before or after she gets the permanent resident card she will lose her permanent resident status and have to start all over with the new husband as sponsor.

Also the divorce will make them look more closely at the next application with the new husband. Of course it depends on the reasons, if there are claims of abuse by the current husband then there are special provisions allowing her to continue the application without a sponsor.

In this case I would suggest a meeting with an immigration lawyer might be helpful, they often don't charge for a consultation.
