2(6)+ 7+8 over 3

I think is solved as 2x6=12 then 7+8 =15 followed by 15 divided by 3 =5 and finally 12+5 =17
Is this process correct?

Depends on how the exact question is written

2 X 6 equals 12
12 plus 7 plus 8 equals 27
27 over 3 will equal 9

9 would be the final answer.

***you would be correct if it was written 2(6) +(7+8 over 3)

Is it: 2(6)+ ((7+8)/3)

Or:
(2(6)+ 7+8)/3

1 is 17 and 'tohter is 9
So it is critical as to how the problem is posed.

Following the rules for order of operations, the multiplication and division operators take precedent over addition and subtraction, so the answer is:

2(6) + 7+8/3 \ = \ 2 \times 6 + 7 + \frac 8 3 \ =\ 12 + 7 + 2\frac 2 3 \ = \ 21 \frac 2 3
