It doesn't matter what anyone else thinks. If you like him, don't be afraid of their reactions.

You don't want to miss out on knowing a great person just because other people might not give him a chance. :)

Get to know him and form your own opinion.

If you like him, why are you worried about what other people think of him?
What is it we are supposed to help you with? You either have your own mind or you don't.

They are right, there's only one thing that matters in this situation, and its you and him. The others opinions do not matter.
I'm a bit of a strange guy myself, but I've had people who saw past that, one of them even seemed to regret dumping me a few years later.
