I am trying to replace the rear brake pads on our 2004 Chev Malibu. I can't seem to compress the piston on the caliper on the drivers side. There is also more wear to the passenger side pads. If the piston is locked, can I repair it or does it need to be replaced.

I have a large "C" just for calipers. Can use a vice and big socket or something. Pressure needs to be applied evenly, not one side. If no good, replace.

Remove the master cylinder reservoir cap first or you may damage the ABS.

All wrong! This is not difficult.

The rear caliper pistons need to be rotated to be retracted. A "special" tool for this purpose is available. Purchase the universal tool to save some money (around seven to ten dollars,or less, if you already have a ratchet with a short extension.)

Engage to tool with notches on the face of the piston and turn clockwise until the piston face is flush with the caliper housing (the caliper boot will collapse while the piston moves inward). Insure the tabs on the new pads will align with the caliper notches and install the pad with the wear indicator "squealer" tabs in the same position as the originals. Now is the time to apply a anti-squeal compound to the contact surface where the pad mates to the caliper. Clean the surface, with a wire brush, where the pad rides on the caliper frame. There is no need to lubricate this contact point. You are done!
