No, just a government issued ID like a driver's license. Make sure the name on your ID and plane ticket match exactly.

You can travel freely without any id. However should you need rent a car, hotel room buy a beer, you'll need some sort of photo id. Passports are for traveling outside US... FOR NOW, let the republicans have their way and we'll need id to leave the house

As a political scientist I am slightly offended by this answer. While the travel portion is answered correctly, the part about the "republicans" is a biased opinionated and incorrect statement meant to reflect poorly upon a large segment of the population. Please keep the political opinions out of general answers needing simple facts. The republicans have asked for a standardized national ID that would be difficult to reproduce as a forgery and asked that the states remake their Drivers Licenses to achieve this. This doesn't mean they are asking for passports to travel within the US.

There is no need for passport, unless traveling outside of the United States. An ID is required though.
