View Full Version : Us Alaskans, Alaska Wild

Jul 18, 2007, 09:10 AM
Well, I have to say us Alaskans have been waiting for something like this. My husband is very happy and I already went and got all the hats and t-shirts... Do you think they are going to make it, or swallow it all?

J_9
Jul 18, 2007, 09:13 AM
You are talking about the indoor arena team that plays at Sullivan Arena right?

If so, they have been around since 2006. The will be playing the intense league for the 2007 season. They have only won ONE game since they began.

Their current standings are 1 - 12.

startover22
Jul 18, 2007, 09:20 AM
Yes, it has gotten bigger this year. My brother called and said he went to the ONLY game they won. I bought the gifts for Fathers Day and he said it was a waste of my money. I really want to be supportive... My brother said the games are really fun and it has brought a few bucks to Alaska...

J_9
Jul 18, 2007, 09:22 AM
Cool. He went to the July 5 game then LOL

startover22
Jul 18, 2007, 09:25 AM
Yes, you know way too much. I haven't looked into it in a while and just going off what my bro says. I was just wondering if you thought this would be a long term thing or what. I am excited to go and see a game either way! I will meet you there...

J_9
Jul 18, 2007, 09:29 AM
I miss Alaska, what can I say? LOL

I don't know how long they will hang around with a track record like this. It is so expensive to keep a team running.

They are also experiencing some financial woes, so we will have to see.

startover22
Jul 18, 2007, 09:31 AM
Yes, but if I just buy that one ticket, maybe they can stay afloat!!

J_9
Jul 18, 2007, 09:33 AM
Yup, one ticket'll do it!

startover22
Jul 18, 2007, 09:34 AM
I miss it too and I can't wait to see a game even if they are a bunch of losers.

CaptainRich
Aug 14, 2007, 06:59 PM
Ahh! There you are! How did I know to find you here?
No team is a loser! That's why they play the game.
Btw:(wrong thread again) where in Alaska are you from? I'm from Homer.

startover22
Aug 14, 2007, 08:02 PM
Anchorage, raised my whole life... got to Oregon about 5 or 6 years ago... Oh the Salty Dog, oh the Dogggggg

CaptainRich
Aug 15, 2007, 04:30 AM
Ah, yes, the Salty Dawg! Been tossed outa there a few! Ha!
Grew up in Homer since the sixth grade, but lived in Juneau and Adak before that. My bro still lives in Homer, though the rest of us drifted around a little.

I did a GoogleEarth peek and it's all different now. Time changes everything.

startover22
Aug 15, 2007, 07:25 AM
Not only time, but people change it too... Next time I go back, that is a drive I would like to take... I think I spelled it wrong... is it the Salty Dawg or Dog... I know it doesn't really matter but I was thinking about that last night...
I went to Juneau for a bowling tourny in the 8th grade... came out in 1st place... scored 272! Not bad not bad, OH, but I took the kids bowling 3 weeks ago and I hit 76 and my 4 year old hit a 92... I think that was the score... LOL
So Captain, I am wondering what you did in Adak... I knew a few people from there. They were my wonderful friends next door always telling us about their native traditions... Whale Blubber... first and last time I will EVER try that again... (I get the whole idea just not the taste) Anyway, Have a great day.
GO HAWKS1

CaptainRich
Aug 15, 2007, 07:45 AM
Ya, it's Dawg. No biggie.
What I did in Adak: turned four. My dad was in the Coast Guard, that's how we got to, and moved around in Ak. I do miss it, though.
I've been up and down the AlCan a few times. Once when I was a kid growing up in Washington state, we had a huge camper and drove that up, through Circle and everything! Awesome! But when I was in the Air Force, I got transferred from Travis, in Ca, to Galena Air Base, on the Yukon River (Central Ak) I drove my Toyota Celica from Sacramento all the way to Homer... ALONE!:( When I left Sac-to, I had a dozen or so 8-tracks (I'm dating myself now! ) By the time I got to Homer they, one by one, all flew out the window! Go figure! I'd do it again, but I'd take my XM with me!:p

startover22
Aug 15, 2007, 07:51 AM
What is an XM?
Wow, you were there, that is wonderful all the experiences and excitement of driving that long all alone.
My husband and I left in our motorhome with three kids, we drove and drove... we even had the turtle with us (I was afraid they would make us leave the turtle at customes) That was the best experience with the kids I have ever had, and my husband. We had so many things go wrong and right that nothing will ever compare. And the people along the way. So cool. I am 33 now and I will never regret leaving. I have a sister and two brothers still in Anchorage, I miss them and my friends dearly... BUT, I love Oregon. The kids love it too. I have it in my mind you throwing 8 tracks out the window. Too funny. Hugs to you... Start

CaptainRich
Aug 15, 2007, 08:01 AM
XM is digital satellite radio. It's awesome! Hundreds of channels from all venues. Rock, comedy, jazz, news, sports, you name it. And the best partis it's mostly commercial free (the catch is you pay a fee, rather than the advertisers paying the fee... )

That drive, no matter how many times you do it, is a life's worth of experiences! You'll learn a lot from the people and cultures you encounter, and possibly find out things about yourself you never knew.

Remember the sign post at Watson Lake? http://image50.webshots.com/150/6/13/71/450761371ToNjeF_fs.jpg?track_pagetag=/page/photo/travel/canada&track_action=/ViewActions/FullSize

Aug 15, 2007, 08:17 AM
I couldn't pull it up, I don't remember by name but I bet if I saw it I would. Yes, life experiences. Isn't it funny where they take us...

CaptainRich
Aug 15, 2007, 03:42 PM
I've got pics on my PC, but if you have Webshots... great source!
Or GoogleImages, look for Watson Lake Sign Post, sometimes called sign post forest. It's just signs and stuff from everywhere! People from different places have, over the millennium have put stuff up there. I've got two there. One is hand made from when I was in sixth grade, and more recently my front license plate from Guam (long story)

J_9
Aug 15, 2007, 03:48 PM
Oh, Watson Lake, I remember it well, LOL

The AlCan, an amazing adventure, especially in MARCH! Whitehorse, Lake Louise, what wonderful memories.

CaptainRich
Aug 15, 2007, 03:54 PM
Hey, J_9! You, too! Small world!
Mosquito's as big as a cheezeburger! Lol

J_9
Aug 15, 2007, 03:56 PM
OMG, the mosquito herds as big as the caribou herds!!

Camping at Montana Creek (north of Wasilla) was always an adventure, keep the spray handy for the hummingbird size squitoes and the guns handy for the grizzlies!!

CaptainRich
Aug 15, 2007, 04:05 PM
Stopping in Turnagain Arm and watching the Dall sheep on the mountain across the arm...
I remember as a kid watching moose, sometimes fifteen or more, around our house, winters in Homer. My bro sent me an email with small blackies snooping around his pickup.

J_9
Aug 15, 2007, 04:09 PM
Heck stopping on the arm? Did you ever climb the arm? What an experience it is. We would stop round about Beluga Point, cross the highway and climb to our hearts content. When the tide was high we would chase the sheep up higher and higher just to do some whale watching.

The Bird House... it burned, but has been rebuilt.

Portage Glacier, oh the times we had there when the parking lot would be covered in ice and the wind would blow our truck around the lot. LOL

In 92 or was it 93 when Mt. Spurr erupted. What a PARTY that was! 92 I believe.

startover22
Aug 15, 2007, 04:21 PM
Portage Glacier is so different now... And Beluga Point was really cool! Awww J, glad to see you back here. Maybe we should call this Anyone from AK instead of the WILD...
Oh the memories from my childhood, being on boats from 4:30 am to whenever we caught our limit... no dinner until we got back to camp usually around 8ish... Hee hee, my dad says I have a bad attitude about his boat... LOL
Anyway, glad to see you on this thread, indeed you loved and still love Alaska...

CaptainRich
Aug 15, 2007, 04:25 PM
Before my parents left Homer (due to Mom's health ) Mount Augustine popped it's cork. She said Homer, to the east of the volcano, was covered! I don't remember what year that was, but she sent me a sample of the dust in a small ziplock. It was a very fine powder, and today, probably wouldn't make it through the mail.. LOL
And, you, walking around on the arm, the sheep weren't too concerned, and practically picking up "gooey duck" clams down on the flats.
I vaguely recall the big quake in '64 that nearly wiped out the southern Kenai.

J_9
Aug 15, 2007, 04:26 PM
Oh, Beluga Point in December with the Aurora above head after drinking A LOT of tequila. And no, it wasn't the tequila. LOL

CaptainRich
Aug 15, 2007, 04:32 PM
Portage Restaurant was the first place I'd ever eaten a French Dip sandwich. Yich, yuch, eeeww nasty!! My Dad took me with him to Anchorage to get parts for our snowmachines, and there was this incredible race machine there. He said if I could lift the front he'd bring it home. I was maybe seven or eight, but I pulled on that thing sooo hard (it didn't budge!)

startover22
Aug 15, 2007, 04:33 PM
Northern lights... I tried my hardest to explain them to Davy, she is too young to remember so I told her we would look it up on the net... I haven't yet, but I will.. Good night to my Alaska frineds! I can't wait to see what kind of memories you stir up for me... G'Night

J_9
Aug 15, 2007, 04:35 PM
Speaking of St. Augistine, we used to fish the Ninilchick during the Salmon run.

Oh, and don't mention clams. I can't ever go clamming again!! LOL

CaptainRich
Aug 15, 2007, 04:38 PM
Dang! Watching the N-lites when you could see your breath and it was so cold your nose hairs froze. Such a beauty!
I'm getting home sick...
Sittin' in the pull-off at Anchor Point, looking for "diamonds on the water" in the moonlight

J_9
Aug 15, 2007, 04:43 PM
What beautiful memories we have. Floating the Kenai River... Camping at Copper, oh what was that Copper?

Moose chasing me to the laundry when I lived on Hillside.

CaptainRich
Aug 15, 2007, 05:03 PM
The fishin' was so good there, I get frustrated anywhere else.
It's pretty tough to explain the lights to anyone who's not seen them in person. Ya just got to take him! There's no video I've seen online that can hold a candle to the real thing.

CaptainRich
Aug 15, 2007, 05:05 PM
As a kid, I stupidly tried to shoe a moose away from our burn-barrel. I'll be darned but that moose chased my young butt right back into the house! I droppped the broom my Mom handed me! LOL!

CaptainRich
Aug 15, 2007, 05:25 PM
Here you go! This should jolt some memories!

Oh, no! Then I found this and started scrolling...

I just Googled Watson Lake Sign Post.

This is fun. I got to call my brother...

Aug 15, 2007, 05:41 PM
I used to have a paper route in Anchorage, so at around 4 am there are plenty of moose, I almost accidentally stepped on ones head and I then almost peed my pants cause it got right up out of the snow and I swear it would have eaten me if I wouldn't have backed up slowly... I quit my paper route right then and there, of course after I delivered the rest of that days papers... LOL
I still never got to see a wild bear... I will be going back soon to see family, anything you want me to bring back? Ha, I can't wait to see it. I miss it more now than ever before!
Halibut Cove... fishing, I got to go hunting with my dad one time and it was the best memory I have of him... so far cause he is alive and well, but King Mountain, aww, those were the days.
I got married at the look out for Captain Cook downtown Anchorage...
Wow.

Don't you feel like you are special just being able to say you have seen that before..
Thank you for the link, I got goose bumps.

J_9
Aug 15, 2007, 06:10 PM
The link took my breath away!!

I spent the summer pregnant with Rae camping at Montana Creek. We had a mother grizzly and her two cubs invade our camp. It was the most interesting weekend of my life. The story would take too long to tell right now. May post it tomorrow as I'm getting the kiddos ready for bed.

I have to agree with you Rich!!

The three of us have something VERY SPECIAL in common that many people never get to experience!!

I believe we have officially bonded, LOL.

startover22
Aug 15, 2007, 06:27 PM
Yes, bonded is a great way of putting it. And, thank you both for the great memories. They are very dear and SPECIAL to me... especially since I can share them out loud now... Hugs, Start

My because is a chef in AK, he went there after hearing all of the wonderful adventures I had. He has decided to stay.

Oh, yeah, and COOTS!!

Who could ever forget Chilkoot Charlies? Or the Alaskan Bush Company. Yeah, been to the Bush, it was an experience I will never forget either. Although I did loose my lunch near Eagle River on the way back home to Wasilla. LOL

Yeah, we have limited space for pics. What I do is save my pics to Image hosting, free photo sharing & video sharing at Photobucket (http://www.photobucket.com) and then you can post them here.

startover22

Very good. Davy is such a big help, and the boys ended up coming so Dustins mom is out there with her (she brought a whole trailer load last night)... Hell, I am using the money to do the kids rooms so what ever I get is fine with me... BUT the more the better...

CaptainRich
Aug 17, 2007, 01:55 PM
I tend to use Webshots a lot, I'm always creating more albums over there. I'll put 'em there and send a link. I should be able to figure that out.

But - what's for sale. I didn't hear about a sale!

Yay, that's better. My birthday was last week, I am officially 43. LOL

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!

I wish I had all my pics on my computer. I have one of me on Portage Glacier in the winter... Climbing the mountain at Beluga Point... Camping at Montana Creek...

Oh, yeah, and who can forget the Bluegrass Festival or the Moose Dropping Festival.

startover22

What about the Trapper's Ball or the Miner's ball. Duct tape dresses and tux's... so cool. I wonder Cap'n what they had in Homer? Bingo LOl

J_9
Aug 17, 2007, 02:46 PM
I always loved the celebration at the Summer Solstice. When the sun just dips behind the mountain.

LOL, the camping trip I went on with the bears...

We were at camp, must have been 20 of us all out in the wilderness, no one around but us friends. Most of the folks went to Talkeetna to get some beer and other staples.

There was me, my husband our friend Kim, and Jeremy... about 6 dogs. Oh, yeah, and I was 4 months pregnant. Well, we saw the mommy bear and her cubs. Jeremy freaks and climbs in his truck with ALL the dogs... Kim jumps in her truck.

Guess where the guns were? With Jeremy and the dogs locked in the truck. Hubby had his side arm on, but I was worthless.

HOWEVER, (emphasis on however) we did have bottle rockets!! So my pudgy little pregnant self climbed in the back of the truck and started shooting bottle rockets at a dang grizzly bear!!

The story does not end there.

startover22

J_9
Aug 17, 2007, 02:55 PM
Believe me, the 4th of July here is ALWAYS a reminder. John won't let me forget. LMAO

But, in my defense... I wasn't the MAN who was afraid and locked myself in a truck with guns and dogs!! I actively tried to get the bears out of camp.

As I said the story does not end...

Later that night, still day time cause it was June, everyone was trying to get some sleep, and my hubby woke for some odd reason. He looked across the firepit at Kim & Greg's tent, who comes strolling up but mama and her cubs. All we could see above the NorthFace tent was a neon sign DINER!!

We yelled at Kim and Greg and they came running out. Greg was trying to put his pants on. Well, guess what, they weren't pants. It was a RED FLANNEL TURTLENECK!!

I have a picture of that somewhere.

Yes, there's actually a rock across Kachemak Bay called, oddly enough, Puffin Rock. You can approach in a small boat and not spook 'em, but you got to check the wind direction! Lol
And at least when I was there bowling was big. We had a whopping four lane alley!

J_9
Aug 17, 2007, 04:17 PM
4 lanes really!! Wow you were BIG TIME!! When I lived in Wasilla we had a grocery store (Carr's) and a gas station!! That was about it. Had to travel to Anchorage for any excitement. LOL

CaptainRich
Aug 17, 2007, 04:27 PM
Yep. Four, count 'em, four lanes, no waiting.

I got to say now, I graduated Homer HS in '75. That's nineteen-75, OK, so that was HUGE! Lol
Ya, and the trips to Anchorage were few and far between. Heck, going to Soldatna was a big deal. They had department stores there!

I participated in HS sport for the travel! I remember one time, we went to Seward on a school outing, way back when there was some brand of rootbeer in a brown bottle... well, me and a buddy got kicked out of their gym for "drinking" We hid the bottle's label like the joksters we were! Telling everybody what happened.

Holy crap, my sister lives there now and there is everything from Freddies to Walmart, gas stations galore and everything else you can imagine. I wish you would go back just for a small vacation, you would be so surprised, maybe even disappointed from all the traffic and people. It is crazy out there now.

startover22

Homer still has Carrs, I actually have a "savings card" from Carrs still, it works at the safeways, but that is the last standing Carrs, in Homer.

CaptainRich
Aug 17, 2007, 04:51 PM
Carr's was the competition. I worked as a kid at Inglima's Supermarket, on "the boulevard" Inglima and my Dad were pals. Geez, how I hated small towns then... haha

We didn't have a traffic light in Homer, back while the Earth was cooling...

When we first move to Homer we lived on CT Hill (I never knew what CT stood for) but there was a path through the woods to the theater that kids from the neighborhood used. Friday's and Saturdays my dad would get so mad, people just cutting through our driveway. I'm calling him tomorrow... I doubt he remembers but I'm going to ask him.

Yay, that's better. My birthday was last week, I am officially 43. LOL

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!!!

I wish I had all my pics on my computer. I have one of me on Portage Glacier in the winter.....Climbing the mountain at Beluga Point....Camping at Montana Creek...

Oh, yeah, and who can forget the Bluegrass Festival or the Moose Dropping Festival.

Well, then, Happy Birthday!

Geez, the shellacked Moose Dropping Earrings! LOL

Downtown was The Alaska Wilberry Products store (famous for their Moose Dropping art and preservatives). We'd pick enough alder berries, and anything else we could find, for money to go to the movies.

Firweed, we have talked about this before... Lady next door brought me some and asked if I knew what it was... LOL
Love it, never ever forget. Oh, Forget-me-Nots... State flower
And, a good morning to you! I have to get back out there, straighten stuff and get ready for another day. Did pretty good. So far

Never been to Alaska sadly, however I would love to see all this untouched wilderness... not during the winter though, my days in sd have left me completely void of ever wanting to see snow again...

J_9
Aug 23, 2007, 05:41 AM
Oh, Rich, I got that one. BEAUTIFUL!! Breathtaking to say the least!!

Wizz, snow in Alaska is so much different than snow in SD. WHY you ask? Cause there are soooooo many things to do in the snow up there.

Bobsledding down avalanche chutes, just to name one.

Aug 23, 2007, 11:55 AM
Hmmmm, suppose I'll have to think about it, but the only way I'm a going is if I get to wear one of them cool looking parkas... always wanted one

J_9
Aug 23, 2007, 11:59 AM
Oh yeah, and the fox skin caps... LOL with the nose on the front and the tail hanging down the back.

Jeeze, I used to wear shorts out when the wind chill was more than 30 below. Different kind of cold up there.

startover22
Aug 23, 2007, 12:04 PM
I wore shorts too J, and the people here in Oregon still think it is weird that my kids wear them even in the rainy winter. Should I make them wear pants? LOL

J_9
Aug 23, 2007, 12:06 PM
Heck my hubby doesn't own a pair of pants. Well, maybe one pair for special occasions.

startover22

CaptainRich
Aug 23, 2007, 01:06 PM
No long pants here in FLA!
Didja know: they got special hangers for shorts here?
(Frankly it's been so dang hot, I changed all my screen saver photo's to winter scenes!)LOL

startover22
Aug 23, 2007, 01:20 PM
Hahaha, yes, hot here but not as hot as it usually is and I feel like I missed out on a lot. Not to say I wasn't doing things, but those boys kept me from doing stuff we normally do... including taking my trip to ALASKA!! I will get there, just a few more months and I am out of here.

CaptainRich
Aug 23, 2007, 02:13 PM
Only 104 at my house. Add ten for heat index = 114. The haze is thick!

J_9

Grillin them on the sidewalk, huh? LOL

CaptainRich
Aug 23, 2007, 02:24 PM
That would work! LOL

Maybe if I move the grill closer to the pool and stand on the steps while I/they cook... :p

This may take another beverage or two!

J_9
Aug 23, 2007, 02:26 PM
What is your beverage preference dear, I'll run in the kitchen and get you one. LOL

Oh yea the grill closer to the pool, that's how I do it!! Yet the water is as warm as bath water.

CaptainRich
Aug 23, 2007, 02:34 PM
Beverage's? Anything in two's... one for each pocket! LOL

Yeah the water temp into and out of the low nineties for weeks. Got to find some block ice!

I am so jealous of that.. no snow or even real change of seasons in Florida... I know that Alaska is just breathtakingly beautiful. Palm trees get really boring after awhile! I will get there one day! Even if it is just to hang out with the polar bears and the penguins.

AWSOME Tom! I was raised there all my life since I was 8 months old... left when I was 27 or a little older! I would love to go back for the tourist stuff, I would not like to go and live there again though! Loved it, so pretty, thanks for sharing! Let us know what you got to do, the glacier is pretty, I didn't hike it, but visited close enough to see it!
