WE have a Heil central air conditioner model # NACO36AKC3. The copper pipe entering the outside unit keeps freezing up. I happened again last night. The outside tempature wa @ 60 degrees while the inside temp we @ 75 degrees. The air flow into the condo was not cold. Upon investigation, I observed the copper pipe going into the unit was frozen over. In the past when this has happened, the outside temp was 85+ degrees. We attempted to set the thermostat at 68 degrees and were told by the service person that we were setting the inside temp to low. We should not set the inside temp below 71 degrees. This doesn't make any sense to me. Would the installation of insulation over the outside copper pipe stop this from happening? Our neighbors who have the same units do not seem to be having any problems at all. Please advise.

Skip, the reasons that air conditioning units freeze over are due to low on refrigerant , dirty filter , dirty evaporator coil, registers closed in part of the house, furniture blocking the return air grill. Any thing to reduce the air flow across the evaporator coil will cause this freezing. A trick that I use to check the evaporator coil is to remove the blower from the furnace (two screws) and with a flash light look up through the furnace at the coil, this is the easiest way to see the under side.
The reason that he advised you not to set the thermostat to low is true.
Good luck, Mike
