I recently found out I have a misdemeanor criminal record. I was caught on video shoplifting when I was 16, and plead guilty, under the impression it would be on a juvenile record and wouldn't show up. However I have discovered NY is one of 3 states where offenses committed @ 16 or older go on your adult criminal record.

I am 20 now, and about to graduate in a year. Is there a way to appeal/expunge my record before I finish school? I'm studying to become a teacher.

I don't know if it counts for anything, but the cops never called my parents and they had me sign the "damages stolen" papers without them or my lawyer present. I also never had a lawyer in the coutroom.

It was my first offense, and I am an honors student, not so much as a speeding ticket since that day. What's the likelihood of me being able to get this off my record?

IN NY Juvenile records are supposed to be sealed. Are you certain it showed up? Did someone run a background check on you?

Yes, my employer at a daycare. I had just turned 16 when I plead/was caught, so I guess it was considered adult. (I read online NY is 1of 3 states where 16 is the minimum adult offender age instead of 18) :-(

The question is though (see original post), does that info make it easier/feasible to expunge this off my record?

I'm not 100% clear on it but I believe you can have it expunged through a court hearing. What county do you live in?

Rockland County. Do you know the process for expungement by any chance?

Your best bet would probably be to contact the DA's office in Rockland and ask what you need to do. You may need to secure an attorney. Like I said I'm not 100% on the procedures.
