Call your local library (reference department). They have coin and currency price guides, and will tell you the book value of your coin.

This would be the least expensive way to find out the value without buying a book on the subject yourself. But, I would suggest actually going to the library. Inside the price guides, you will typically find what to look for on the coin to determine it's condition. A lot of the time, you will even have pictures of the possible conditions of coins. What condition the coin is in greatly determines what the value of it is. Being old is not the chief determining factor of the value of coins, but it is the condition of the coin that matters the most.
