To become an attorney in the US you need to get a bachelor's degree from a college or university. Then you need to go to law school for 3 years. After that you have to pass the bar exam.

I wasn't sure what type of law I wanted to practice at first. All I knew was that I didn't want to handle litigation (going to court). My first job was with a real estate law firm and I ended up loving it.

Most of family law is where you represent people in divorces and also represent juveniles in criminal cases.

There are so many different types of law. My sister in law is in Asst District Attorney and she said that its easy to decide what type of law to go into. She said you find your passion pretty fast. Study hard, get good marks go to a good college and you'll have no trouble getting into a good law school

Yes, as noted you go through college and then law school, There are some states that even have part time law school ( I know California, GA, and TN have law schools at night which will take longer than 3 years)

Knowing what you want to do with it, that is a different story. Some people decide not to practice for various reasons and use it for business, political goals or even become preachers after law school.
