I noticed this lump the other day because it felt sore behind my ear. It's pea-sized and behind my left ear about 3/4 of an inch abive my earlobe.it feels hard and doesn't move. It's very close to the crease (where my ear meets my head)... I get dizzy once in a while and headaches from it on the left side. I have a doc appt in a week... just wanted some opinions

I don't know how you expect us to diagnose a medical condition you describe and make you feel safe. How can you feel safe from perfect strangers saying 'okay this lump is okay, don't worry about it, you are okay!

Okay, IMO, this is what is happening. You have been obssessing about this lump, which I have had over the years about twice behind my ear, which hasn't been an abcess because I have never even had acne. It will go away as long as you forget it about, and you know what, your headache will go away too, and if it doesn't in the next couple of days, for heavens sake, go see a doctor.

Rude, maybe yes, maybe no. It all depends on how mature one is to take no nonsense advice because when it comes right down to it, there is advice in the above post. Maybe not what you wanted to hear. We can't diagnose anyway, very difficult to do from words on a screen, we can only assume with very little advice or background of the poster what is actually wrong.

My acne comment is actually quite true, if one is experiencing really bad acne then anything may pop up behind an ear or on the back of the neck, or on the back and these are sometimes boils. So my suggestion still stands, if this lump is bothering you to the point of distraction then go see a doctor for a proper diagnosis.

Lol I have to agree with tickle it is probably a zit or something to that affect. It might be a cyst.
Of course having headaches and getting dizzy is far more serious. It could be from a lot of different reasons. You might want to try webmd.com to narrow down some suggestions. The sight isn't a subsitute for a doctor however you can type in your symptoms. (the headache and dizziness) and it might guide you better.

Well,I had a lump inside my ear a long time ago,and thought it was a pimple,but I was wrong.It was a spider bite.The bump was in my ear for about a month,and it finally popped,and there was a large hole where it was.I used peroxide on it daily,but at this time still did not know it was a spider bite.One night I was taking a bath and dunked my head under water,and began washing my hair.All of a sudden my ear began to itch,and I reached in and scratched it,and felt something on my finger.I looked at it,and it was the spider.I screamed bloody murder.I had headaches every day,and the Dr. said it may have laid egg in my ear.Well,it was about 15 years ago,and I still have a scar in my ear,so you never know what it could be,but you might want to have someone check it out. :eek:

I am going to give you what is only a guess but what you describe sounds like it could be a swollen lymph node possibly due to strep throat or maybe mono. My daughter had the same symptoms. The lump stayed there for 3 months and did not go away until she went through 2 courses of antibiotics.

The lymph system is present throughout the body. Common areas where enlarged lymph nodes can be felt include the groin area, armpit, the neck (there is a chain of lymph nodes on either side of the front of the neck, both sides of the neck, and down each side of the back of the neck), under the jaw and chin, behind the ears, and over the occiput (prominence on the back of the head).
Common causes of enlarged lymph nodes:
* Infectious mononucleosis (behind the ears or neck) Symptoms of Mononucleosis can often be mistaken for the flu or strep throat. It's a good idea to call your doctor if you have had a fever, a sore throat, and unexplained constant fatigue or weakness. Other symptoms of mono can include: headaches, sore muscles, larger-than-normal liver and spleen, skin rash, abdominal pain
* Rubella, also known as German measles (behind the ears)
* Ear infections or sore throat (neck glands, sometimes)
* Infection in the scalp (behind the ears or in back of the head)
Please keep in mind this is only a possibility, not a diagnosis. It's good you have an appointment. But don't freak out until then. If it is the same as what my daughter had you will be fine with some meds. Good luck! Let us know.

Swollen lymph nodes are the first warning of infection in the body. It can be any infection from a cold to a low grade fever. Lymph nodes are directly connected to the immune system.

I had a small lump appear above my ear last sun. evening. Then 3 more small ones behind my ear lobe Mon. evenin. Its now been a week lumps are going away, but when I got up this morn the left side of my throat was extremely sore and swollen. Only the left side of my throat hurts and I think this is unusual. I have had strep throat and mono before. With both of those infections my whole throat hurts not just one side. I am making a Dr. appointment this morn but just wanted to see if anyone else had any ideas

I noticed I have one as well. I am sick right now with a chest cold. I asked the doctor I work for if he thought it was a swollen lymph node. He said that sure enough, that's probably what it was. He said keep an eye on it, and it will probably go away after a few weeks.

As for your headaches, I'll bet you there's something else going on completely unrelated to this lump. Think about things like... chaginging of medications, lack of sleep, lack of water, poor vision, or a vitamin defficiancy. (Just to name a few.) If they persist, see your family doctor. If they can't find the solution, they will refer you to a specialist. If they ever get really bad, you always have the option of an urgent care center (for immediate help) or the emergency room.
