I sure hope you have been doing your homework because this question has answers available everywhere. My father was born in Funchal and I just received my Portuguese Identity card and passport within 40 days of my initial application. Step 1. call the registo in Funchal. You need to know the fregusia where he was born. If your dad is still alive have him call and order a fresh copy of his birth record. While you are awaiting the arrival of that have your birth certificate and your mothers birth certificates translated into Portuguese by an official translator. Then have the translations notarized in your nearest Portuguese consulate or embassy. Have your original birth certificates notarized at the consulate that has jurisdiction in the area of your births. For example, I was born in California. So I had my birth certificate notarized at the San Francisco consulate. My mother was born in Washington Dc so her birth certificate was notarized in the Embassy in DC. Once you have all the birth certificates translated and properly notarized, make an appointment with the consulate worker in your area of jurisdiction. My area was New York City. Take your ID and proof of your residency in the jurisdiction. The form takes 10 minutes to fill out. The charge is the equivalent of 75euro. The consulate sends it to the Registo Centrais in Lisbon. Once it is received it takes them about one month to produce your new Portuguese birth registration. I was actually in Lisbon and picked up the ID, took it to the ID processing office in Arriero and I got my card in a few hours. The next day I went to the Governo Civil in the Chiado neighborhood and I had my passport in 48 hours. I can give you all addresses and phone numbers if you want.

Hello Lisbon Rose, I finished getting all of my birth certificates translated and sent to Lisbon through the New York consulate and I just received that I am now a citizen of Portugal but now I have to go to Portugal to get my ID card and passport, do you still have those numbers of the places you went to in Portugal. It would be greatly appreciated!

Dear lisbon Rose
I live in singapore and registered all the necessary documents with the embassy in thailand who have o course sent it to crc in lisboa. I have no news from them as yet on the status every time I enquire with the embassy they ay they are awaiting the news.
Its almost a year how long does it take to register my birth in portugal
Could you advise me on how I can speed up the process I will be visitng family for christmas this dec and maybe could personally try to do it there. Id greatly appreciate some info from you
I have corresponded with crc but have no clear answers from them is there a way to find out online the status

I am a South African with a Portuguese Grandfather,(born in Madiera, now deceased) my mother, his daughter, was born in South Africa. Am I eligible to apply for an ancestral passport. If yes, how do I apply? My cousin recently travelled to Madiera to meet relatives and renew connections there, so I do have some documentation, etc.

I tried contacting home affairs in South Afica for my birth certificate but they cannot find it and basically say that I don't exist.

What do I do ?

I have the same question as Maria-Theresa, my grandfather was born there, my father was born in South Africa and so was I.. And if I am eligible, what documentation is needed?

Hello everyone. I only today received notification of all of these emails. I will try to respond to all. If your mother or father was born in Portugal or Madiera or the Azores there is no problem at all. Just follow the routes and be persistent. Keep in touch with your consulate worker frequently and then follow up in Lisbon after your embassy says they sent something. It is like playing tennis.If you are lucky you can establish residence in the New York or Washington DC regions and use those consulate workers. Some are rude but they work hard. No one does anything unless you call and ask what the last step taken was. Those of you who only have grandparents born in Portugal, You must process your non-portugal born parent before you can process yours. That takes time, 5 years in the case of my mother but that was because she was born at home and only had a baptismal certificate in 1924. We had to create a delayed registration of birth for her.

Those of you born in Asian Territories, god help you. It has been made very complicated because in the past there was much falsification of documents and the Portuguese officials are suspicious of Goan, Chinese etc applications. Get a Portuguese speaker friend to help you. In some cases applications had to be made by a certain date and if you missed it, game over for you. Also, because of the financial crisies in Portugal salaries have been cut back and the workers have become less productive, Ha ha. Funny how lazy people can get when their salaries are cut and taxes go higher.

Hi,I wish to know if registering ones birth in CRC in Lisboa automatically makes one a portuguese citizen.
My father has just registered his birth and my brother intends doing so now.But they are Indian citizens and India does not allow dual nationality in the proper sense.as such technically they automatically lose their indian citizenship once they voluntarily accquire foreign citizenship.
So is there a formal step wherein one aactually applies for Port citizenship which they can avoid doing and yet just register their births and keep the option open for them to apply for the same when they are ready?

Is it absolutely necessary to go to lisboa to pick up ones cartao and passport or can one pick it up in the country one is residing in?
Also if you have the cartao can u then apply for your passport at any portuguese consulate in the world?
