Hi I have a Rheem a/c-heating unit. The pipe comniong from my air handler and also the condenser outside-I think that it what it's called- are both VERY hot. This is an all of a sudden thing. My unit was working fine @5:00pm today and now @ 8:30pm it is blowing hot air. All my intake filters in the house are clean. I did not notice the outside fan turning either. Any clue what this may be? Thank You in advance for your help.

There is a number of things it could be , maybe the fan motor failed and the compressor kicked off on internal overload. Turn it off and let stand for at least two hours or more to cool down and wash the condenser in the mean while , then try it again after it is cooled down. Watch it when you try to start it to make sure the fan comes on, Check breakers and fuses .

Ok I have looked online and the part I am talking about on the outside unit that is very hot is the compressor.

OK I will try that. Should the fan come right on or is tehre a delay? Thanks for the rapid response.

Yes the compressor will get very hot with out the condenser fan running and will kick off on internal overload . This is something that you just can't reset and have to wait for it to cool, washing it will help.

Check the breakers and fuses , if the motor is bad it will not run , if the breaker is popped then resetting it may be all that is necessary to get it back on line (you still have to concern yourself with why it tripped the breaker ). A A/C will sometimes get hot and kick off if the condenser becomes very dirty.
There should be no delay in the fan operation.

I can tell I am getting power to both the outside unit and the airhandler inside. But the fan outside is not turning and there is a humming noise too. I am hosing it down right now. Hopefully that will work till I can get someone here tomorrow. If not I break out the fans. Got to love Florida.
