It won't spin or drain. We replaced the lid switch and the machine just humms. We have recently replaced the motor coupler. Any ideas what the problem might be? Thanks.

If the motor is humming the pump is frozen or pump belt is broken or badly worn.

Thanks Doug. Is there a good way for us to check if the problem is a frozen pump or if the pump belt is broken/worn. Teresa

You will need to remove the cabinet. I reread that this is direct drive. No belt. Pull the hoses of at pump and check to be sure they are not clogged. Then observe motor to verify it is turning. If it is and I assume it will agitate as you just said will not spin or drain, more than likely it's the pump. Check the simple things like drain hose not kinked and you said had a new lid switch? Advance the timer dial when it goes to the spin cycle to see if it makes any difference. Run empty load through washer as see if that makes a difference.

The hoses are clear and not clogged. The motor is turning freely. We put in a new lid switch last week. We advanced the timer dial to the spin cycle and it didn't make any differnce. The motor just continues to hum with some clicking sounds in the dial. Do you think we need to replace the timer dial? Or are there gears in the transmission that can be stuck? Thanks.

Well Since you have replaced the coupling you know how to get to the tran. I would go back in and check trans. Try turning it by hand in both directions. If it turns easily the timer is bad. When the timer is in spin cycle does it advance any or just stay in one position? You may look at the contacts in the timer.

If the motor is humming, your washer probably has a frozen pump pulley or a broken pump belt. To check the pulley, remove the pump from the washer and try to rotate the pulley manually. If it doesn't turn freely--if it's frozen or stiff--replace it. If the pump belt is broken or looks quite worn, replace it--but be sure to check the pump pulley before you change the belt.

If there is direct drive unit then check the transmission unit... it maybe defective.

Doug- We took the motor off, it ran fine in one direction for agitation. In spin cycle the motor hummed & we turned it by hand in the other direction and it slowly got up to speed. Do you still think it is the timer or something like the motor? Thanks for all your help.

Check the transmission. Try turning it in both directions by hand. If it will not turn in both, it is locked up and needs to be replaced. If the trans pass this test I do believe the motor could be bad. Without being there to actually see things myself we just need to verify good from bad componets. Do verify that the coupler is installed correctly. I'm thinking it is the motor

just a thought here, but you CAN reach the point with an appliance or any other machinery where you have to look at cost vs. worth. If you put $225.00 in parts in a washer that is 8 years old, or can purchase a new one for $329.00 that is brand new and will have a warranty, which is the best plan? Be cautious when replacing parts. It can throw you into the WORTH side of the equation in a Hurry. Good luck, I hope you can get either the current one running, or purchase yourself a new one.

Was going to work on kitchen lights.. so turned off fuses... opp I turned off washer/dryer.
So turned it back on.. went to turn on dryer/washer
Found washer drained and spinned.. hmm..
Was able to turn dial and she started filling so walked away.. oh well I thought.
Came back she was full.
Started playing with dial.
She would only humm... and not spin or agitatate or drain.. thought maybe a dial gaget prob.
Other mentioned may be a lid fuse or connector thingy

Even when I put my hand in.. I could not spin the big thingy.
Then I started thinking motor ceased...

I just kept playing with dial.. filling/ drainin with bucket.. and she kicked in for a sec.
Then the spinny thing inside freely moved.
Tried to carry on.. and boom.. still hum.. moved an inch and centre thing locked again.
Ahhhh
So there I go taking off the back.. breaking plasit clips etc.

All I had to do was tip machine on its back
And a hose went in and another hose went out of this white disk.
Unclipped white disk
Pulled off hoses
Looked inside disk.. and there was a little baby sock wrapper around a plastic flywheel inside beige circlar thingy right on bottom of washer.
Puller er out. She work perfect.

Cept for all the plastic stuff I ruined pulling the back off it..
Ahhh.. one of those middle / back plastic things held the water filler thingy..

Perform this test use extreme caution!! Set timer to spin on reg cycle, hold/drag the basket with 4 fingers, and activate lid switch with screwdriver, if u can hold it back real easy then yhr spin clutch is worn out, they sell a kit for, and Google for "whirlpool clutch video" there r a few - good luck

My washer stopped suddenly with an F halfway through the cycle. I now cannot get it to drain or spin. I tried unplugging and it just sits there and hums. It Will not do anything. Should I call repairman or just replace washer I have had it about 6 years and I have not been overly impressed with it since I bought it.
