In determining the density of an unknown solid, it was immersed in water. If a portion of the sample sticks out the water, how will this effect the calculation of the density?

It will make it completely wrong, surely? If the solid is less dense than water, then you will get the mass of the object by weighing the displaced water. But the volume will only be known if they solid is completely immersed.
