I live in an old house built in the 1920s. It has been configured into 2 apartments, the upstairs of the house, and the 1st floor, and there is a basement to share. I love it here, it has a lot of character, and I love the landlord, but I think he might not be very honest when it comes to the condition of the building. I would like to have it inspected myself, without him knowing, I just want to make sure for my own health and don't want to start any problems. Also, if it turned out that he wasn't being up front about the building condition, I wouldn't feel totally ignorant on the subject when asking for a little clean-up. (I think there is mold, that is my main concern)

How much is it to have a house inspected?

Is there someone from the city who could inspect it for a lesser amount?

I believe you could call to city hall and have someone come and check out the building for safety. Other then that you could always hire an independent inspector. I'm sure the charges vary by state and what you believe the issue to be.

Very smart idea - I had lived in a house that was built in the 1800's and we knew the landlord wasn't being honest and we just never got around to having it inspected. I really regret not doing it.
