On June 28th I went to the doctors complaining about a sore throat and a swollen gland on the right side of my neck. She looked in the back of my throat and said she thinks I have mono. She took a swab of my throat to see if it was strep, and then a blood test. I went home to wait for the results. They called later that day and said I had neither strep nor mono. They said it was just a viral infection. The sore throat went away after about a week and I thought nothing of it. It was about 4 weeks later and the lump on my neck came back and I started to get a sore throat again... but this time it was worse. I started to get a fever of 101 and I had the chills for about 10 minutes then I would be sweating because I felt so hot. I went back to the doctors about 3 days after this had started occurring again. She did another swab and another blood test and said they would call the next day. Both tests came back negative. She said it was just a very bad viral infection. I am not really sleeping at night and don't feel very tired the next day. How long will this last? I am going to visit a college next weekend and really don't feel like being sick for it. Is there anything I can take or do?

If it is a viral infection you can only wait it out. Take pain relievers such as Tylenol or Motrin to knock the fever and pain. Alternate the 2 every three to four hours.

But viruses must run their course. There is no antibiotic you can take for a viral infection.
