View Full Version : Internet Addiction?

I'm having a problem with a loved one and what I see as an addiction to a particular website. It seems like a large amount of his time is spent on this site posting things, replying to posts, having heated debates with trolls and whatnot. When I mention that he may have an addiction problem, he tells me it's the only thing keeping him sane, that the site isn't the problem, I am, that I'm just trying to control him. He runs several panes when he's online and one of them is so he can keep an eye on this site at all times. We'll be talking on the phone when I hear him typing away completely missing what I'm saying. We rarely have a conversation that isn't about this site or what's going on there. When I tell him I'm going to leave if he keeps it up, he gets angry and hangs up on me. I know that placing an ultimatum on him is not right, but I don't know what else to do. Nobody else knows the amount of time he spends on this site, so they don't think he has a problem. It's driving a huge wedge between us and I don't know what else to do.

Is this an addiction problem?

Just to clarify, it's not this site, it's another popular site. He's not making money while doing it and it's not an adult site. It's a hobby, I feel has gone way past a hobby and in to an obsession. And, yes, I tried joining him there and it did not turn out well. In fact, it made things worse.

When I saw your post, I was afraid I was my wife. I seriously need to cut back the time I spend here and one other site. That is managing to limit my time in areas such as religion and politics.

Kind a hard question because, if he's making money then.. watching over prospective clients and stuff and see what they looking to buy or view... might require a lot of his time.
But if he's looking at adult sites then its more then just the money he can't find what he's looking for in the real world but he knows he can go to to that place and look and it will be there no naggin no yeling no nothing just him and the PC..
If moneys not being made then id say addiction to watch ever he's looking at.. his get away from his troubles at home.
Just a thought from the country

Chicken, I think she is saying he is addicted to the AskMe site. I spend a lot of time here, too, when I have down time at work.

Anything can become an addiction if it interferes with your life. You have to be willing to back up the ultamatum or it will be useless.

I'm not sure if its AMHD or a similar site. I admit to being addicted to these sites. But not to the point described.

Well I can understand, as CBW used to complain I spent too much time on these sites, until she caught the "bug" as well.

Have you tried the same?

Sounds like the OP is talking about LJ or Ebay or something. Wait you said you confront him about it by phone? I assume you don't live together, maybe try getting him to go out with you more, he could be bored and find the site he goes to as his only way of entertaining himself when he's alone.
