Hi I have sort of a unique situation and was hoping someone could answer a question for me. I am an american citizen in my 60's and my grandparents were from Portugal, do grandchildren qualify for Portuguese citizenship? Also considering that my grandparents and parents are deceased how would I go about it?
In the case that I would be eligible for Portuguese citizenship, would my children and grandchildren also qualify for citizenship once I obtained my own?

You are eligible to apply for the Portuguese citizenship through as grandson of Portuguese citizens.

Unfortunately, the effects of your citizenship would only act from the date you grant it on.

You cannot transmit it to the children and grandchildren that were born before you grant the Portuguese citizenship.

At least your children could apply for the Portuguese citizenship as great grandchildren of Portuguese citizens, but they could not transmit the citizenship to their children that were born before they granted the citizenship.
