I am replacing a toilet in the basement of a home I just bought and the cast iron flange is about 1 inch above the concrete and the toilet will not seat right, it wants to rock. Any ideas?

You're going to have to get down there and look to see where the high spot is on th toilet. And then you're going to have to chisel the cement lightlly in those areas until the base fits and doesn't rock. The cement will be easier to "work" than the cast iron, unless you have a grinder. Either way, safety is paramount. Were eye protection.

Or you could take it back and exchange it...

Hey Mike,

Capt. Rich focused on the toilet. It's not the toilet that's at fault. It's the flange that's so high that the bowl won't seat.
There's nothing you can do to the cement or bowl to fix this problem. It's the flange that needs to be lowered. You now have options. (1) You can remove the lead and oakum joint, remove the cast iron flange and take a adjustable wrench and "nibble" the pipe down to floor level and reinstall the old flange,**or** (2) you can break out the flange and joint and "nibble" the pipe doen to the floor and install a new flange.
