I have an 89 Honda civic that will not start... Main relay is clicking like is should but I pulled it out and it smells burnt... If I leave it for a few hours it will start... and as long as I let it run it starts running. But if I shut it down it will not start again.
Hopefully tomorrow I can get my hands on a new main relay.
I did the diagnosis in the haynes manual and everything seems to check out.. I haven't checked the spark plugs yet.

Yes, replace the main relay and perform the K-Test on the ECM.

it could be the relay.. it would also best to check your spark plugs and honda spark plug wire (http://www.discounthonparts.com/honda-spark-plug-wire/), fuel injectors and also look for some dirty connections - clean it. by the way, when was the last tune up?

Not the main relay... new one and still no start.

What were the results of the K-Test?

Was no need to perform the K test... Turned out to be a burnt spark plug. Replaced all the spark plugs. Gap them to spec and checked the resistance in the wires. Starts no problem.
Car was bought used. Suspecting that car was not regularly maintained before.
Starts every time now.
Thanks for the advice.
