My boyfriend and I have been together for almost 10 months we recently had a baby boy, now he is threatening to take the baby when we get into arguments. He sais that they will give him custody because he has a job and can support the child.. Is this true? Can he get custodyif we split just because he works? His job requires him to work 8am-9pm... and all he would do is pawn the child off on his mom to baby sit.

Threats are designed to scare someone, make that person believe something that may not even happen, cause someone to fear the other person and give in. You are the baby's Mother and your boyfriend would have to prove that you are an unfit parent. Which is not as easy as it sounds. Your ex would have to have SOLID UNDENIABLE PROOF in order for a judge to label you unfit. If your ex just goes in there and says "well she did this and this.. and she's unfit because of this".. that won't cut it. The judge will probably get annoyed with him more than anything for doing that, I know I would! If you have any further questions, I would suggest you go to childcustody.org and ask the ladies on the custody boards some of your questions. They can answer any other custody (as well as child support) questions you may have.
An unfit mother is just what you think it is. If you do drugs, have a chronic drinking problem, in and out of jails or institutions, party too much, neglect your child in any way, don't send your child to the doctor when there is an illness, have endangered him, AND he has to be able to prove these things, which can be hard.

Right now your ex is bullying you. Do not give in. Rather take a stand and get informed as to your rights and reponsibilites. Call an attorney, someplace like Legal Assistance (which is free or low cost, based on income). If you do not feel safe where you are, get out and away from this guy. Call the police (if he is making threats to you and your baby) or a women's abuse shelter.

Whatever you do, don't feel powerless.
