You'd really be wise to see an attorney. A divorce is typically too complex to be done as a do-it-yourself project.

A mediator may be more quick and cheaper but in order to really protect your own interests you should have an attorney. Especially if there are children involved or either of you has substantial assets. Without a lawyer representing you, you're almost certain to get burned, especially if your soon-to-be ex has an attorney.

Courts frequently order mediation in divorce cases, so why not start with mediation if there are no complicated issues involved? Since tl_levine asked for advice how to file for divorce online, I assumed that there are no such issues.
