After you have everything in place to start the business, i.e. vehicle or vehicles, insurance, licensing, etc. you need to get your name out there. Cold calling is okay. Leave your business card and also a flyer about the service you are going to provide.

Hi Jason,
I'm also interested in starting a hot shot business. Just wondering how it's coming along for you. I'm down in Texas.
Are you hauling big loads or small ones?
I'm thinking on starting small and perhaps later moving on to bigger deliveries.
Well I hope it's working out for you.
I think the hardest part is getting your name out there and obtaining the business.
