I'm replacing a 4 year old non-programmable thermostat (Totaline (Model #P474-0100)) for a Carrier unit with a programmable thermostat (Lux (Model #TX9000TS)). The question I have is the labeling for the wires are different... what wires go where on the new system? I also noticed some unused wires that were never connected to the Totaline system. How do I find out what those wires go to and/or if they are usable at all with the new one?

Totaline Setup:
R - RED
G - GREEN
Y1 - YELLOW
W2 - WHITE
B/O/W1 - PINK
Y2 - EMPTY SLOT
C - BROWN

Unused Wires - Purple, Black, Light Brown & Blue

Lux Setup:
W -
Y -
G -
B -
O -
RC - (Jumper is provided)
RH - (Jumper is provided)
C -

The thermostat you had is a two stage heat and two stage cool, heat pump. The new thermostat is a single stage , this thermostat can be used on heat pumps but it should be a two stage to provide the second stage "W2" wire connection, this wire is to bring on the aux. heat (electric heat strip) in the air handler. The extra wires will go to the air handler and are probably unused.

So, are you saying I should return this thermostat and purchase one that operates a 2 stage system?

How do I tell what thermostat is a 1 or 2 stage system? I'm looking on the package of the new system and in the manual and no where does it say whether it's a 1 or 2 stage thermostat. I f I return this iutem for a 2 stage thermostat, how would I tell? Would the employees at Lowe's or HomeDepot know?

I just found a thermostat at HomeDepot, and it mentions that it works with 2 stage heating & cooling systems. Would this work for my system, any thoughts on this one? Please see link below:

Yes this thermostat would work fine for replacing your old one.
