I saw on TV something about mardi gras and I knew instantly I wanted to be there once. I know it is celebrated in North America somewhere, but I could not find much about a more specific location. Can someone help me out with this.
Oh, and can that someone also confirm the date this is celebrated.
I'm from the other side of the pond, so I cannot ask anyone in my direct environment.

Thanks a lot. Is it celebrated every year on February the fifth or does it change?

Hello Romeo:
There's a better one in Rio. Same dates - same celebration.

It's also celebrated in other places if you're interested (such as)
Aruba, Barbados, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Grenada, Haiti, Jamaica, St. Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Saint Kitts and Nevis, and Trinidad and Tobago

It's different dates every year, because Mardi Gras marks the last day before Lent starts, and Lent is based on Easter. Easter's date is set every year as the first Sunday after the first full moon after the Spring Equinox.
Mardi Gras in New Orleans is somewhat subdued after Hurricane Katrina. It's also celebrated for a couple of weeks before the actual final date of Mardi Gras.
You could contact the New Orleans Chamber of Commerce or Tourist Department for more info.

Well, thank you all for the information. Based on this I can determine my destination to go to if I run away from the carnaval here (european "mardi gras").
