Today on the way to work my check engine light came on and the engine started to cut, the way it does when you redline, but it's doing it at exactly 4000 rpm, in any gear including neutral.
Then on my drive home from work it stopped cutting, but the service engine light was still on. Then just before I got home it started to cut again, right at 4000 rpm.
I don't know if this has anything to do with it but yesterday on my way home there was a lot of rain and flooding and I had to drive through a couple inches of water.

. Check all under-dash and under-hood fuses using a test light or multimeter.
. Check for codes.

Have you tried to use another ECU... that may be the cause. Try changing out ECU and see if the redlining at 4000 rpm quits... and if it does then you need to change ECU... your ECU might be bad. Try that out see if it helps.

Tachometers can short out and kill ignition systems. Try disconnecting the tach and see if the problem goes away. Normally, it's a BLU wire that attaches to the igniter. Since you have a distributorless ignition, you may have to look around for it.

Just went to the dealership with the same problem. Felt like an idiot. Oil was 3/4 quart low. Apparently VTEC engine is smarter than me and has a governor of sorts that won't let the car rev without oil. Paid them $50 for checking my engine light code. Bought a $3 bottle of Penzoil and was all better.

I have almost the same problem. I have a 1996 Honda Integra Type R. The RPM gauge goes to 10,000. The car revs to about 9,500. I have a problem where when the car is cold it can take the revs (but I don't really push it when its cold because there is no VTEC until its warm). But what happens is when the car warms up the highest the car will rev is 3,500 - 4,000 and the RPM gauge just bounces as if it is at its limit for the gear I am in (and it does this in all 5 gears. And it is at this point that the check engine light comes on. Solutions?

Whitez07,
. Check for codes.
. Check/replace the ignitor.
. Check the Throttle Position Sensor.
